Crazy Game In The Meadowlands!!!

Eagles win 45-38 over the Giants for first place in the division. It was back and forth all night and included some fumbles, an interception, some screw ups by the refs and even some punches thrown. Eagles' Jackson ties NFL record for touchdowns of 50-plus yards. Ultimately McNabb and "Action" Jackson won this game for the birds who soar to 9-4 atop the NFC East....

When discussing earlier this week his team's inability to win close games,
Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb partially blamed the outcome of the
recent narrow loss on an officiating blunder on Sunday night against the
Cowboys.

In the online-only bonus portion of his weekly "Official Review" segment on
NFL Network's Total Access, league V.P. of officiating Mike Pereira was
candid regarding the decision via replay review not to move the ball after
McNabb was stopped on a fourth-and-short quarterback sneak during the fourth
quarter.

As Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth pointed out during the NBC broadcast,
the fact that the play occurred near the midfield Eagles logo made it easy
for the referee to identify the precise spot at which the ball should have
been placed in advance of a new measurement, in order to determine whether
McNabb actually had earned a first down.

Pereira agreed.

"I think I'd move it," Pereira told host Rich Eisen. (Not to be confused
with "I think it moved.")

Pereira explained that there was enough evidence on the video to "establish
a point" at which the ball could have been placed, in relation to the beak
on the bird that has been painted on the grass.

He also said that, without the logo present, the ball could not have been
moved. The presence of that point of reference made it easier to re-spot
the ball, and then to bring the sticks back out.

"It might have made a difference," Pereira conceded.

And, given the specific circumstances at the time, that might have made a
difference in the outcome of the game.

As the league continues to search for the new Mike Pereira, we're hopeful
that the next guy has the same willingness to acknowledge areas in which the
men in black and white can do a better job.

To Eagles Fans: Does 5-2 feel like unfamiliar territory?

Eagles Win!! Eagles Win!!!

Eagles pull a stunner out of their hats by laying down a cool 40 points on the Giants with the final score 40-17. What makes this win even more sweet is that most everybody had the Giants winning this game with such excuses as, "Well, Westbrook will be out", "Will Witherspoon must still get acclimated to the Eagles defensive scheme", and my favorite, "There is no way the Giants are going to lose 3 games in a row". Well, they just did. :)

Eagles are now in first place in the NFC East. The Cowboys winning earlier today sets up an epic prime-time game next Sunday night in Dallas. Both have 5-2 records. Can't wait.

It is what it is.

This is Andy Reid football. And we look back over a decade, and we've won a lot more than we've lost. We've made playoffs like what, 7 out of 10 seasons I believe - and never lost the first playoff round.

The Eagles do not play smash-mouth football. While they've never been the Raiders when it comes to penalties week after week, they also have many games seemingly every season where they DO get a lot of penalties. Andy is big on formations and personnel groupings and shuffling a lot of guys in n out. The D is predicated on pressure via the crazy blitz schemes and also a lot of rotation guys. This team is about mis-matches and chunks of yards on offense and turnovers on D.

What we've seen however, is that while that approach works more than not and they have definitely made some huge stops over the years. They have struggled often against top QBs that are accurate, know how to read a D, and prepared. Manning, Brady, now Brees, Romo at times, some others. 

Todays game was lost on a variety of counts. The most obvious, was the D scheme incapable of stopping Brees and Sean Peyton's offense. New Orleans is like us, they don't have a ton of super-stars but a lot of decent guys who can make some plays. Shockey/Celek, Desean/Colston, Bush-Bell/Westrbook. When you add the mistakes, the turnovers, the horrible field position with Brees getting half a field and Kolb starting inside the 15 over n over ... and then penalties ... it was a recipe for disaster.

New Orleans charged down the field for a quick and easy TD. I thought, ok, Carolina scored easy last week too. Then we stiffened. When Kolb to DJax came right back to tie, I thought again, ok, this is a battle now. But we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. 

All that wildcat stuff, it got 4-5 yards, was that in lieu of a real running game? Keep Kolb upright? I've said all week that we needed to grind some running game -- to slow them down, keep them out of rhythm and keep the ball out of Brees hands. He can't throw 100 tds if he only gets the ball once in a quarter. The Birds won't turnover every week. They won't penatlies every week. ANd we know they can move the ball in chunks.

The Concerns:

1) Defense cannot get pressure without blitzing and good QBs know how to beat that blitz a lot

2) Defense continues to struggle against top TEs and QBs that can get them the ball (we miss Bradley)

3) One-one-One coverage from corners is spotty in some cases

4) LBs are still not upper-echelon

5) Westbrook is not the super-star back he once was for whatever reason and Curtis hasn't been the same guy either now since 07. 

6) 3/5 of our intended Oline is not playing

7) Our 5 time Pro Bowl QB had a fractured rib

The Positives:

A) This came early in the season -- this team has confidence and it is unlikely to look this bad again

B) Kolb though I'm still not convinced is the future, played a lot better than I expected. He took hits, he got rid of the ball quick, and yes, he made some terrible INTs, but Feeley has no upside, Kolb could improve or learn from mistakes, we don't know yet. I still feel he back peddles too much but he showed a lot more than I expected

C) Mcnabb is likely to come back and Vick should only get better in practice as the season goes on, QB will be an asset before the year is out

D) Our D destroyed Carolina and we know they can play big and our next 4 opponents all have serious flaws and QB questions -- which is when our D thrives 

E) There are no super-powers in the NFL right now. Any of a number of teams can look great on a given SUnday including the Birds -- and I'm a lot more interested in how we finish than how we looked in week 2?!

F) McCoy has time to improve if Westbrook nags all season. He may not be a super-star but he's a legit threat.

G) DJax is the #1, Avant and Celek are for real and Maclin will only get better. I'm not worried about us moving the ball.

H) ST and penalties are things that can improve

Our season is about 2 things -- getting sorted and beating the teams we should beat. We have to beat Oak, TB, KC and Wash.  None of them are as bad as St Louis and Detroit, but they are all below Eagle level including Wash and we have to win those winnable games. 5-1 would poise us for playoffs. Take advantage of that. 

Get the online straightened out and start scoring more TDs on offense. Do the best you can with this D personnel.

Make playoffs.

Then, in playoffs, do not get out-coached and hopefully make it to SB, because I do not believe that Dallass, NYG, Minn , Atl, or New Orleans are better than the Birds. All of them could beat us, but if we play our best, we can beat them.

I think back to losing to Carolina, TB and Arizona in NFC Title Games -- and yet we beat all those teams in the regular season. I think having this loss to New Orleans now makes it a lot more likely we beat them come playoffs should that occur.

I'll close with this --

in 1994, many of you were on this list as the Eagles beat this shit out of Niners in SF 40-8. Garner had over 100 yards, RC looked good and the Birds went on to reach 7-2 and playoff talk was in the air. The Niners were in trouble. Steve Young was yelling at George Seifert on the sidelines and Joe MOney and SB wins were growing distant. 

The Eagles ended up 7-9 and the Niners won their 5th SB.

If this game can be a learning experience. If Reid and Mcdermott can learn from this -- to try to be more prepared for a good QB and coaching scheme and to realize their deficiencies. The Birds do better playing with an early lead. They have the fire-power to get that early lead and they need to beat up on teams not quite as good as they are. They rose big in 2006 to win all those games late and the opening playoff game and ran out of steam.

They rose in 2008 to win late, caught some luck and beat NYG and Minn, ANd held the lead in the 4th quarter in Ariz.

I still think if we sort out the injury stuff and get momentum late -- we are as likely as any NFC team to win the NFC. I no longer see the Colts or NE or Pitt as teams that are as good as they have been in past seasons. I see no other up-n-comer SD, Houston, Jets that could dominate the Birds either. So -- it's still possible.

A lot of work to do. We are a team with weaknesses. They got exposed today.

To whomever posed the question would we have won today with Donovan? I doubt it. 

THere are some key sequences in a game like this that make all the difference. If the Birds had kept it at 10-10 at the half, or even managed a 17-10 or 13-10 lead, and then came out and rather than fumbled over an easy TD to New Orleans had come out with a nice long sustained drive or even a quick score to be up 24-10 or 20-10 -- this is a whole other game. Maybe we win, maybe we lose, but a handful of plays mattered. The fumble they got back on the challenge, if that goes our way and we score fast to make 34-27 ...

That's why I know that if we face these guys again later in the playoffs it could be a whole other situation. Brees will never be neutralized just like Manning nor BRady would, but they can be disrupted and the overall team effort can get you a lead and do other things to get a win. Today it was done to us. We could do it to others.

This season could turn in to a 7-9 season easily, but not necessarily. 

This is Andy Reid football. He's aggressive on O and D and sometimes it works and other times not. It gets so complicated at times, that the lack of precision = penalties and it can really hurt us.  I'm old skool, if I was an owner, I'd prefer the stifling D with a cadre of Pro Bowl caliber LBs and stud front 7, a couple great RBs and a smart tough QB who could make some throws and get wins. I like Pitt style football and they have 2 SBs recently, not to mention the 4 from the 70's. But the Birds win a lot of games, and have won a lot of playoff games too. We beat Pitt last year, by the way, another time the Birds beat an eventual SB winner in the regular season (someone should look that up, but its a frequent occurence in our history)

In all these seasons we've been dominant once in 2004. Even then we lost to Pitt in a blowout our one loss as we went to 13-1 and I believe if we had faced anyone except NE and or if we did not have 3 INTs we could have won the SB. If we win it this year, it won't be because we were dominant but more like when NYG won it 2 years ago, by getting hot late and putting it al together in the playoffs.

I hate losing, I hate getting whoppped at home, but we're 1-1 and lots of time, our schedule is favorable right now if we don't play down to the competition -- 

5-1 is possible, doable, -- let's get there and see how things look n feel.

Next year we will see if Westbrook is still part of the major plan? Shawn Andrews? Curtis? We may go get a Pro Bowl G in FA, or find another back to go with Westbrook and Shady -- promote Maclin and drop Curtis? Who knows... but there is enough there to win and make playoffs this year.

Week 1: Panther's Game Thoughts

Other than Brown's athletic interception in the 1st quarter, this team looked pretty inept so I am amazed at how that switch just turned on with defensive and special teams scores. Of course, since some football god hates us, McNabb's injury certain takes the luster off it all.

* Troubling penalties to start the game. DeSean's celebration one was dumb, too.
* Offensive balance seemed pretty good. Boy DeSean has nice speed and at least had smarts to push that one bouncing ball out of bounds.
* I know the shovel pass to Westbrook at the goal is coming, so how come the defense never seems to?
* Nice work by McCoy; with heat today and Westbrook finally getting some game time, having McCoy do some solid running was bonus.
* Westbrook seemed to get his sea legs as the game progressed which was good to see.
* Up by a ton and with only Kolb as backup, I do wish McNabb would have slid earlier than go for big score. Got to play smart, even though end zone is close.
* Defensive pressure up front was good; lots of guys collapsing in on QB. Good blitz timing.
* If Hobbs can play like that all year, how great could secondary be? 
* Very disappointed in Kolb; both last year when Don was benched and today he had opportunity to show something but just doesn't look ready. Play selection didn't help him though; Andy has to learn to ease his QBs in a game rather than continue to gun it. I don't think Vick  -- two years out of football -- is a great option come week 3, so they better figure something out for the next month or so. But, next two at home and bye week helps; Saints got great O but hopefully solid dose of Westbrook, McCoy, powerful defense and speed on special teams can compensate if Kolb continues to look awful.

Eagles training camp report from Wingheads 8/6

I made the 120mile trek up to Lehigh this morning. It was my first time
ever making it out. I didnt take notes but a few things did stand out to me.

I liked Avant before today but I like him even more now. He completely
turned around every corner that he faced today in drills. He's not the
fastest guy but he changes direction without telegraphing whats coming
before hand better then any WR on the team.

Sean Jones- Seemed to always be around the football on D, had an
excellent pick (Mcnabb) in the endzone to go along with a couple PD's.
Was completely abusive defending the gunner on ST's... Im not even sure
that a gunner made it down the field on him once without hitting the
deck first. He stood out to me. Seemed very physical.

Jackson- The guy glides past DB's and makes it look easy doing it. He
can flat out fly. He looked great today.

Maclin- Had a couple nice catches but... The body language is poor to
me. Walks back to the huddle after plays doesen't seem interested in
finishing plays strong. I noticed he was often on the sideline alone. I
could be reading too much into it, and it may be nothing but thats what
I saw. Maybe he's still getting into the swing of things, who knows.

I was hoping to see more of Ingram, but he didnt do much. Maybe they're
taking it easy on that knee that had some swelling yesterday. He is a
specimen though.

Mays brings the wood. Had a nice open field tackle on McCoy and
generally seemed to be doing a good job.

Samuel- He didnt look especially impressive in one on one drills, but
when they went to the 7-7's and such he was all over it. I guess he
really does read n react well. He picked off Donnie once...

It was a pretty cool experience. Not sure I'll be doing that a whole
bunch the 4AM wakeup sucks lol

Wings training camp Report friday July 31

I took the day off and went down to training camp with my son, IndyEagle
and his son. It was ridiculously packed. My advice to everyone, if you
live more then 45 minutes from training camp, don't bother, it's not
worth it. They have moved the crowds back further and further from the
action. on the far side they moved the fence back about 20 -30 feet from
where it use to be...Now they line all the vip people up on the
inside...So you have to try and look through all the VIP people and the
Eagles bench players. It's ridiculous. If you do attend camp, the first
thing you need to do is locate the Camera Lifts that are way up in the
air. Where ever those cameras are pointed that's the field the 11-11
"thud" drills will go down. Ok on to what i saw....

Qb - Mcnabb looked to be in very good shape and was moving and throwing
the ball well...Two passes that come to mind were a strike to Brent
Celek and a sweet pass he threw over jack Ike to hank Baskett Deep. He
seemed like he was already in mid season form. Kevin kolb through alot
of dump passes. The second string o-line wasn't giving him much of a
pocket. He did have a few well thrown balls over the middle.

RB - i must say going in, the one guy I wanted to See was Eldra Buckley
the Rb that was on the Chargers practice squad, I thought if a guy could
make a team with Tomlinson and Sproles he must be decent. He looked
Awesome! ran with authority, speeds and showed good vision. He seemed to
have helmet problems though, kept getting his helmet knocked off.
I think Lorenzo Booker looks decent catching the ball out of the
backfield, but very Reno Mahe like running the ball. I was very
impressed by the power display of Leonard Weaver...WOW! Ran into the
line and pulled the pile for 6 yards!!! Let me tell you all, this is the
biggest RB we have had here with speed since Hershel Walker. This dude
is a Beast! 3and 1 4th and 1...fear not!

TE - Any of you that go to camp are are gonna say "who is that #88" that
#88 is HUGE!!! Cornelius Ingram is Huge!!! He is a massive sized TE that
can flat out Fly!!! I was highly impressed with this kid. Brent Celek
was no slouch either, he took a short slant pass and turned it up field
showing some speed. He also looked more muscular to me.

O-line - I watches O-line vs D-line drills and this is what i
saw....Nick Cole wants a job, everyone he went against he stood them up
or planted them in the ground! Max Jean looked very solid today as well.
We watched Stacy Andrews absolutely PLANT Mike patterson! I mean he
buried his Ass!!! We didn't see Andrews go live in the 11-11 thud
though, I think he sat that out. Todd Heremans Looks incredible...Rock
hard and lean muscle. he is in incredible shape! King Dunlap also
impressed using his long arms to fend off defenders...however Savy
veteran Darren howard got under Dunlaps pads on one play and blew him
away. Fenuki Tepou is a Massive man, that has lead in his ass...didn't
move real well at all. Although Jason Peters was only in shorts he looks
so massive and in shape.

D-line - As a group, looked like absolute garbage! Our O-line just
destroyed them. The only two D-linemen that stood out today were Chris
Clemons(He looked very very good, and Darren Howard.) bryan Smith looks
like he is lucky he is 230 Lbs. I'm not liking this.

Lb's - I'm sorry to all you Stewart Bradley lovers, but Joe mays belongs
in the middle.I Love Bradley, but I think he would be better as a
SLB...joe Mays is a Killer! The guy is a beast...he blows up play after
play after play...and he looked lean. We watched him blow up and least 4
plays in the backfield. He really reminds me of Sam mills. Chris gocong
looked very good today, was all over the field. He even looked good at
DE, got good penetration as a stand up pass rusher.

Didn't see a whole lot more guys...I saw Sheldon Brown make a few nice
plays, but that was it. The Eagles ran the football more then i have
ever seen them run it in training camp. Quinten mikell made a few nice
plays vs the run.

The most impressive thing today was seeing Andy Reid. He looks like he
lost an entire person off his body. He has to be down close to 100 pounds!!!

Overall....I thought camp Sucked....too many people, not enough space.

But, such is life. That's all I have...times yours

Eagles Defensive Coach Jim Johnson dies after battling cancer.

From PhiladelphiaEagles.com: The Philadelphia Eagles are saddened to announce Jim Johnson has passed away Tuesday afternoon at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with cancer. Sad day for football fans and Eagles fans especially. He was one of the greatest defensive coaches of all time and was the face of the vaunted Eagles D for 10 years. He will be missed. On a side note, It's going to be so weird this season not seeing Dawkins and now Jim out there on the sidelines. :(

McDermott takes over Eagles' defense for recovering Johnson

McDermott has big shoes to fill because Johnson is widely regarded as one of the top defensive masterminds in the NFL. Johnson is known for his aggressive, attacking style, and his defenses have played a major role in the Eagles' success over the last decade.

Vick released from federal custody, but his NFL future still unknown

Yes, he did the crime, but he also did the time. He kind of unfairly became a punching bag for people who may have something against black athletes, especially black athletes who are very successful at what they do. Of course what he did was wrong, but people aren't perfect. He deserves a second shot and personally I believe he should be reinstated.

Summer of '09 Takes Another: R.I.P. Steve McNair

 

He always seemed like a real standup guy. He was one of the best quaterbacks of his generation in my opinion. He always was playing through injuries and he managed to lead the Titans to the Superbowl in 2000 which in my opinion was on of the best superbowls of all time. This is rough news for football fans.

McNabb signs two year deal with Eagles.

 Yay!! Exciting stuff for Eagles fans. I knew he was going to sign, but being honest, I do feel a little relieved. :)

Sal Paolantonio, of ESPN, reports the Philadelphia Eagles offered the Arizona Cardinals a second-round draft choice in 2010, a third-round choice in 2009 and OT Winston Justice in exchange for WR Anquan Boldin, but the Cardinals declined the offer.
